Wholphin No. 15

Love, blood, guts, pigeons, rabbits and MRIs.

A selection of romantically unsettling short films from around the world. Our first Wholphin screening went down a treat so we’re more than a little excited to announce that we’ll be screening the Wholphin series regularly from now on. Hand-crafted film, hand-picked by McSweeney’s, hand-delivered by Speakeasy Cinema. From us. To you. On a big screen. Quarterly. Forevermore.

For those that are unawares, the Wholphin DVD magazine of rare and unseen shorts is designed to make you feel the way the McSweeney’s team felt when they learned that dolphins and whales sometimes, you know, do it. From extraordinary short films, documentaries and instructional videos to foreign sitcoms and other cinema hybrids, each Wholphin edition will make you feel a little bit funny inside. We think all that cross-species weirdness is worth putting up on the big screen. Because whales, dolphins and, yes, wholphins don’t have DVD players we thought we’d do it the way they do. Together, in the dark.

The screening will include highlights from Wholphin No. 15, featuring a couple who eat each other’s pain, the Duplass Brothers celebrating friendship, Selma Blair and Jeremy Davies bungling their way through romance, the haunting prequel to the indie-hit Martha Marcy May Marlene, Antonio Campos’ Cannes-award-winning Buy It Now, Jonathan Lisecki’s Gayby, and seven contestants going neuron-to-neuron in a love competition.

We’ll be screening at The Playroom, a venue that sits above the restaurant formerly known as Eat Drink Man Woman. It’s big, lovely and will be serving dinner, drinks and snacks to you from 7pm. At Wholphin No. 15 the cinema dinner on offer is a roti wrap (meat and vegetarian options) for a round $10 each. DJ Pork Chop will be seducing you with his tunes throughout the night.

“We can’t measure love, but we can measure the chemicals our brains produce when we are feeling the sensation of love, the elevated oxytocin, vasopressin, dopamine, and seratonin levels. It’s not like those chemicals are the love, but those chemicals are how we experience the sensation of the love. And we can SEE it in an MRI. We can see each other’s love. And we are beginning to learn how those chemicals inspire us, and how, in turn, our experiences trigger the expression of those chemicals. Isn’t that kind of amazing?!”

–Brent Hoff, director of The Love Competition & co-founder of Wholphin
