“Perhaps our conscious identities exist all the time, and occasionally surface into the material world?” – Roger Ebert

Speakeasy Cinema and Hear My Eyes present Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Palme d’Or winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives with a live, improvised score by Melbourne hip hop jazz musicians 30/70.

While suffering from acute kidney failure, Uncle Boonmee has chosen to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the countryside. Surprisingly, the ghost of his deceased wife appears to care for him, and his long lost son returns home in a non-human form. Contemplating the reasons for his illness, Boonmee treks through the jungle with his family to a mysterious hilltop cave – the birthplace of his first life…

30/70 are an improvisational based instrumental, hip-hop jazz group who produce lively, energetic beats. The group is heavily influenced by artists such as J-Dilla and Madlib.

Hear My Eyes screenings are experimental, audiovisual experiences that push the conventions of film and sound beyond their traditional forms. Each event consists of the screening of a film paired with an original score performed live by local musicians.

“You can always tell when an audience is in thrall, spellbound; there’s a palpable quality of attention, a sense of total collective immersion.” – Sight and Sound

“Magical, baffling, mirthful, sublime.”
