The Punk Singer

A film about Kathleen Hanna

Director • Sini Anderson

Country • USA

Year • 2013

Duration • 82 mins

Rating • TBC

Language • English

Part reflection, part apology and entirely celebratory of a modern revolutionary.

Almost a decade ago, the poster girl for the 90s feminist punk movement went into hibernation without a word. Now, thanks to filmmaker Sini Anderson and 1,200+ Kickstarter backers, Kathleen Hanna returns to tell her origin stories and offer an explanation on her years of silence.

Existing fans of Hanna’s work in Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and Julie Ruin will cherish the chance to finally hear her tell her own story with the help of fans, friends and collaborators, while those unschooled on her work will become newly indoctrinated Rebel Girls.

“OMG The Punk Singer was INCREDIBLE. It was like a religious experience.” – Brodie Lancaster, Filmme Fatales

Co-presented by Grouse Party.

GROUSE DJs in the bar after the film! GROUSE PARTY is one of Melbourne’s biggest monthly queer parties. DJ’s on the night will celebrate and capture the spirit of all things Riot Grrrl.
