This multiple prize-winning documentary is a surprising tale of love! secrets! pain! adventure! – and dual realities.
The inspiring story of ‘Marwencol’ is one of a man who chooses to build a new life and a new world – in miniature. After Mark Hogancamp is gravely injured in a bar brawl he creates a 1/6th scale World War II-era town as a form of DIY therapy. Populating it with figurines of friends, family and his attackers, he photographs his brave new world with stunning and often comic realism. Then Marwencol is invited to hang in a New York gallery and Hogancamp is forced to confront the spectacular imitation between his life and his art.
Marwencol screens as part of The Richmond Weekender, a unique event series happening at the former Channel 9 Television Studios every weekend throughout March. The Richmond Weekender screenings are age 18+ events.
–Jeff Malmberg, Director
“Who’s to say that Mark’s constructed reality is any less valid than most people’s “real world?” In Marwencol, they may find more love, pain, morality and feeling than in their actual lives.”
–The Village Voice
“Exactly the sort of mysterious and almost holy experience you hope to get from documentaries and rarely do, Jeff Malmberg’s Marwencol is something like a homegrown slice of Herzog oddness, complete with true-crime backfill and juicy metafictive upshot.”
