The Richmond Weekender

Speakeasy Cinema is very excited to be a part of The Richmond Weekender, a project by the dapper folks at Right Angle Studio (The Thousands) who have put together a unique event series that will breathe new life into the former Channel 9 Television Studios every weekend throughout March. Comprising of a canteen, cinema and homemaker’s market, the project aims to create the perfect weekend for the people of Richmond and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Previously the Wertheim piano factory, the Heinz factory and the Channel 9 Studios, the site has seen its fair share of music, food and television antics and we’ve curated a special program of cinema that pays homage to the building’s history. Being Elmo (Mar 10) offers a behind the scenes look at an international icon with a very fuzzy reputation, A Matter of Taste (Mar 17) gives you a delicious look inside the cut-throat world of haute cuisine, Sundance prize-winner Marwencol (Mar 24) is a tale of love! secrets! pain! adventure! – and dual realities, while Girl Walk // All Day (Mar 31) sets the music of international mash-up hipster Girl Talk to a feature-length dance music video that will cement a smile on your face.

Films will screen on Saturday nights from March 10th to March 31st in a purpose-built space designed by Foolscap that’s totally unique to the site (more about this soon!). The boys from Cavallero are making fancy popcorn, ice cream and drinks at TRW’s very own Graham Canteen and if you’re after something more substantial before the film, pop into the Bendigo Street Milk Bar just across the road.
